Dining Chairs that are actually comfortable

Legs cross, then uncross. Shuffle to the front of the seat and slouch at the back. Geeez it’s annoying when you’re trying to get comfortable in a dining chair at a dinner party!

When you sit in a comfortable dining chair, you don’t even notice it. That means that it’s doing it’s job.

Clients I work with have a few criteria when it comes to choosing dining chairs but honestly, there is usually a comprise somewhere. We look for:

  • comfort

  • a preference to wood or steel frame

  • locally made

  • price. Because we never just buy one chair! (paid subscribers only)

So these are the categories that I’m sharing the best finds with you. Excpet for localy made, because I’ll save that one for another time when we’re not just talking about upholstered chairs.

Comfort First

Upholstered chairs with a little bit of padding offer a little extra comfort. But I’ll point out that just because a chair is upholstered, it doesn’t automatically mean that it is comfortable. And also a moulded plywood chair might not appear that comfortable however the shape of the seat just fits perfectly and supports your body.

Also, one chair can be comfortable to one, and not so much to another.

Asking you to test out the chair can be problematic too, because we often buy online, or the showroom doesn’t have a sample chair to try. I’ve asked if there is a cafe or hotel where we can test furniture and that sometimes works. Other than that, when you’re looking at a quality chair you can feel confident that the design has been refined and the materials are tested for comfort.

Upholstered Chairs with Steel Frame

  1. Crown Armchair by Massproductions from District. I love how elegant this fully upholstered chair is.

  2. Bollo Dining Chair by Fogia from Fred International. I own the armchair version and the foam they use is amazingly comfortable.

  3. The Violin Chair by Gubi from In Good Company. It feels really comfortable and supportive yet looks light.

  4. So Far by Baxter. I love the 80s vibe of this one and there is a cool version with armrests too.

  5. Murena Chair by Marta Sala Editions Milano from Moebel.

  6. The Beetle Chair by Gubi from In Good Company surely has reached icon status. This looks great in velvet and it’s just as popular now as when it was released.

Interior by Simone Haag sees the Bollo dining chairs in this neutral palette that is full of texture and personality.

Upholstered Chairs with Wood Frame

  1. Mathilda chair by Patricia Urquiola by Moroso from Mobilia. The combinations are endless when you choose a backrest fabric, seat and arm detail. Love this chair.

  2. Mr. Oops Chair by Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier from Criteria Collection is petite and whimsical.

  3. Hexa Chair Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier from Criteria Collection. I love these designs and included them in my book The New French Look.

  4. Capitola Side Chair by Palecek from Boyd Blue is so beatifully crafted.

  5. The Murphy Chair from Jardan is so chic - and made in Melbourne!

  6. The Baba Chair by Emmanuelle Simon from The Invisible Collection is so sweet and unique.
